Your comment reminds me of a seminar I took in grad school. We were given an assignment to develop a document to form the basis for a world government. I don't recall all the details, but I remember that what we came up with essentially removed many of the things that differentiate different peoples--beliefs, practices, language, etc. The reason was that anything that differentiates a group can also be a cause for friction--and the more similar everyone is, the fewer the causes of strife. that was our thinking, anyway...
