No need to smile

I close my eyes
And feel my feet pushing against the Earth,
Almost as if they were listening.
I kneel to the ground
And press my hand against the Earth.
Do I feel a faint heartbeat?
I lift my palm...
Empty.
Blink...
Still empty.
I understand,
and I don't understand.
But then I remember:
The only things that count
Are those things that never change.
I turn and lift my face to the sun
And there's no need to smile.
